On 23rd Feb, 2021 the students of Writing for Digital Media, IOBM, had the opportunity to welcome Sir Atif Tauqeer where he talked about how to engage with an audience or to develop one’s reach in the field of blogging, vlogging, writing etc. Sir Aatif Tauqeer himself is a journalist, poet, writer and vlogger, he also talked about his experience in journalism in Australia, Germany, England and Pakistan where he also worked as editor, sub editor, wrote screenplays, and also did voice overs for advertisements as well as for a channel ‘Aaj Tak’ He has been giving his services to DW both online and on Tv for the last 12 years. He also own a platform called ‘Mutabadil’ which had an excellent reach back in 2019 with 100,100 visitors.

Sir Atif shed light on how to grab audience attention which includes basic structure of news and story telling. In order to hook the audience till the end, the person should talk about an incident as a whole, how it happened, where it took place, in short the W’s and H of the incident, so that the audience is able to visualise the whole story in their mind.

According to Atif Tauqeer the difference between past and present journalism is speed and due to technological advances the pace of news reach has skyrocketed in the past few years. Atif Tauqeer is of a view that the role of editor is the most crucial as he looks over the facts, statistics, language, credibility of the news as if he ignores any of that in a hurry, it would lead to spreading of fake news. He also talked about the causes of fake news, one being ignorance and the other being propaganda. Sir Atif also talked about the bitter reality of today’s world where fake news is shared or get more clicks than the credible news. Further he talked about that your content should be concise so that it will increase the sharing probability and would not make the audience uninterested in the middle for being too long.

He then summarised the whole purpose of the seminar by concluding that your writing should be enough as well as concise and you should have a complete knowledge of whom you’re writing for or basically who your audience is, also you should stick to words that are easy to read and can be understood by your audience, he advised not to go with purely Urdu or English but rather moderate. He also believes that your writing should not be marvellous but reachable, and whenever you start an argument with your writing make sure you’ve given a thought in order to bring a change in society.
